How do I get into wedding and party planning?

March 27th, 2010

How do I get into this business?
I am a stay at home mother. I dn’t have to work. I want to. So, yes, I don’t mind getting into right now. If you can learn to do things while it’s hard, you can damn well do it when it gets easy.

Are you sure you want to try this now when half of those who have been in the biz for years are being laid off? The independents have mostly gone belly-up. And the tent rental, etc, businesses got rid of most of their “planners” ages ago.

Hotel events are w-a-y down – more than 50% in many cases. There goes all but one of the sales staff (and some have even laid off the last one!) And hotel venues are where most of this biz was and still is. Go for starting your own event planning biz and you are near-guaranteed bankruptcy + starvation within 6 months.

Timing for this absolutely stinks. People are even postponing weddings because they cannot afford it!

It is not an easy business. Looks charming, but you gotta deal with all kinds of customers with various colors and tastes. It is more than dealing with just customer, and it could lead into long relation. I’d suggest you to visit local wedding shop and just have a conversation with them about your idea and they would give you general idea.
